Spur Steak Ranches call themselves ‘the official restaurant of the South African family’ and there are plenty of reasons to believe that may be true. Since the first restaurant opened in Newlands near Cape Town in 1967 (when a Spur burger cost 40 cents by the way), more than 220 Spur restaurants have sprung up around South Africa and overseas. All South Africans are familiar with the friendly Native American chief and the US frontier town names as much as they are with the unmistakeably Tex/Mex cuisine. In recent times, Spur has developed meal choices which are endorsed by the South African Heart Foundation.
